HIROTO RAKUSHO
Contemporary Metal-Leaf Artist
Kyoto, Japan
Hiroto Rakusho is a Kyoto-based contemporary artist who transforms the ancient Japanese art of metal leaf into a language of light, time, memory and silence.
Born in Nishijin, Kyoto, in 1962, Rakusho trained under his father, Jisaku Nishiyama, a master of traditional metal-leaf craftsmanship. In 1997, Rakusho was officially certified as a Traditional Craftsman. While preserving the discipline and sensitivity of techniques passed down through generations, he has expanded metal leaf beyond decoration and established it as a medium of contemporary artistic expression.
Working with gold, silver and other metal leaves, Rakusho creates surfaces whose appearance changes with light, viewpoint and the passage of time. His works explore the moon, prayer, memory, stillness and regeneration. Rather than treating gold simply as a symbol of splendour, he reveals its quieter qualities—its ability to receive light, preserve memory and make invisible time perceptible.
Rakusho has also made significant contributions to the preservation and transmission of Japanese cultural heritage. He developed and patented a method for reproducing the appearance of aged paintings decorated with metal leaf. Through Canon’s Tsuzuri Project, he has undertaken the metal-leaf work for high-resolution reproductions of important Japanese cultural properties, helping return masterpieces preserved in museum collections to temples and historic sites where they can once again be experienced by the public.
His international activities span contemporary art, fashion, design, architecture and luxury culture. His work was presented at Art Expo New York and the Milan Furniture Fair, and he collaborated with American fashion designer Ralph Rucci on the Chado Ralph Rucci New York collections.
In 2011, Rakusho presented the “GOLD LEAF KYOTO COLLECTION” at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. The presentation introduced Kyoto’s metal-leaf expression within one of the world’s most influential luxury retail environments and led to a continuing relationship with the department store.
His major international projects also include “The Golden Renaissance,” presented in Kuwait City in 2015 with support from Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, and “Le Rouge Givenchy — Kyoto Edition,” a limited-edition collaboration with Givenchy in 2016.
Rakusho’s more recent collaborations include CASIO G-SHOCK MR-G, bringing the sensibility of Kyoto metal-leaf craftsmanship to advanced Japanese watchmaking. He has also been selected as one of “The 10 Masters” for THE SILENCE — Furnished by ARMANI/CASA, a project bringing together leading Japanese masters in architecture, landscape, art and craftsmanship.
In 2026, Rakusho personally presented an original work to Scuderia Ferrari Formula One driver Charles Leclerc, symbolising the growing dialogue between his art and international excellence.
His works have been presented internationally in New York, Paris, Milan, Rome, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuwait. An original work was also presented to the City of Paris as a symbol of cultural friendship between Kyoto and Paris.
Rooted in Kyoto yet open to the world, Rakusho continues to explore one essential question:
How can an ancient material carry new light into the future?
